Purchase Advice: Delayed Safety Marker Buoys (DSMB) are just like car seat belts and bicycle helmets, you should always have yours on while diving. These multi function, highly visible, long inflatable tubes are used for signaling. They can be attached to a spool of line, inflated and shot to the surface to mark your dive location signaling to boats that divers are below. You can inflate in a non-emergency to signal your dive boat that you need picked up after a drift dive or if there’s an emergency you can signal the boat you need help. If you get swept out to sea by strong currents you can use it to remain visible amongst high waves. It can help save your life in so many ways; it’s a no brainer standard piece of equipment to have attached to you on every dive you make. They are inexpensive so there is no excuse; buy one.
I really like this Mares Diver Marker Buoy-All In One design, because there is a pouch for a small spool of line integrated into the DSMB and it rolls up with a velcro flap into a tidy package that is easily attached to your BCD or shoved into a thigh pocket. I added a whistle with a zip-tie incase I need to signal for help. When doing dives in deep open water away from shore, I like to carry two DSMBs, just incase. It maybe your only life line to a vessel searching for you in an emergency situation, so I want redundancy.
